LOS ANGELES (August 22, 2011) — Top female athletes showcased their skateboarding and snowboarding skills in front of record crowds along the famed Venice Beach boardwalk as the 5^th Annual Supergirl Jam series came to a close this weekend.  The event series— designed to empower young women by celebrating their strength, creativity and intelligence— kicked-off earlier this month with the Supergirl Pro Junior surf contest in Oceanside, CA. The series features more than 100 pros in surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding and is the action sports industry’s largest all-female competition and lifestyle series.

Alexis Sablone (New York, NY), Laurie Currier (Wrightwood, CA) and Samarria Brevard (Riverside, CA) all had their moments atop the podium draped in the coveted pink Supergirl cape as winners of the Skateboard Street, Snowboard Rail Jam and Am-Jam contests. They represented the best among a field of dozens of young women who participated in the action sports industry’s largest all-female competition and lifestyle festival.

Set against a palm tree-lined backdrop, beachgoers were treated to some of the world’s best female snowboarders as they battled it out on a 28-foot-tall man-made mountain packed with 80,000 pounds of snow. Danyale Patterson was attempting to defend her title against a tough field of competitors who brought mind-boggling tricks that pushed the progression of women’s rail riding to the next level. Ultimately, Laurie Currier stood out, landing clutch tricks like ollying over a three-foot narrow steel down bar to execute a hardway 180 to switch 50-50 to regular, scoring her third Supergirl Rail Jam title and the first place check. Patterson and Desiree Melancon rounded out the podium in second and third, respectively.

“Having snowboarding on the beach makes this such a cool event and so different from every contest out there,” said snowboarder Laurie Currier. “It’s my fourth Supergirl Jam. I’ve made the podium every time, and this one put me back on top in first place. The Supergirl contest takes everything I love and puts it into one amazing event.”

The crowd moved from snowboarding to skate where the top female pro skaters in the world competed on a custom-built course. Alexis Sablone— Supergirl reigning champ and X Games skateboard street gold medalist— reclaimed her title, pulling out the biggest and hardest tricks among her competitors, including a kickflip 50-50 on the hubba and nollie-heeling the Euro-gap.

“This contest is really important. It gives the girls an opportunity to get exposure by focusing on just them,” said pro skateboarder Alexis Sablone. “It’s really cool. The course is always different and the beach provides a more relaxed atmosphere for a contest. I look forward to it every year.”

Lacey Baker (Covina, CA) took second in Skateboard Street and Amy Caron (Huntington Beach, CA) took third. Baker stepped up with some of the most technical tricks in the contest. Other standout athletes included Vanessa Torres, who impressed the crowd with a frontside boardside down the rail, one of the best tricks of the day.

Earlier in the day, top amateur skateboarders Chelsea Castro and Samarria Brevard wowed spectators as they took on the unique head-to-head format and qualified to compete alongside the pros. Brevard won the Supergirl Am-Jam with Castro finishing second, securing each skater a spot on the pro course. Melissa Spillman, who also competed in the Am-Jam, was a cross-over athlete, taking on both skate and snow courses in a Supergirl first.

(August 13, 2011) — One week after claiming the US Open of Surfing Pro Junior title, Lakey Peterson rose above the field of top surfers in Oceanside, California today to win the 4th Annual Supergirl Pro Junior. Sixteen of the world’s best 20-and-under female surfers took to the waves to battle for the richest purse on the Circuit, with Lakey Peterson claiming the $2,500 top prize. Malia Manuel, Leila Hurst and Nagé Melamed rounded off the top competitors in second, third and fourth place, respectively.

“It’s such a great contest,” said winner Lakey Peterson as she showed off her coveted pink Supergirl cape. “I want to thank ASA and Warner Bros. for putting on such a great, well-run event. It’s a nice way to end the year by winning the only 6-Star Junior contest.”

The only 6-Star ASP Pro Junior contest in North America, the Supergirl Pro Junior is the first event in the 2011 Supergirl Jam— the action sports industry’s only large-scale, all-female competition and lifestyle event series. The series, designed to promote female empowerment, strength and independence, closes its 2011 run August 21, where the top female athletes in skateboarding and snowboarding will compete in Venice Beach.

Peterson started strong in the finals with a 6.33 and a 7.67, then improved with a 7.87 to edge out Malia Manuel and take a commanding lead to win the event. Melamed, who was a wild card as a rookie at Supergirl Pro Junior, earned her stripes claiming fourth, just behind the Supergirl vets that took first through third.

“I just want to congratulate Lakey. She surfed really well,” said Malia Manuel who took second. “I’m just happy to be here. It’s a very prestigious contest, the only 6-Star Junior event for the girls— with the largest prize purse and a great opportunity to earn valuable points for the World Tour.”

The next stop in the series is the Supergirl Jam in Venice Beach, California, on August 21 beginning at noon. This event will include a Snowboard Rail Jam featuring a 28-foot tall man-made mountain where 80,000 pounds of REAL snow will be packed and ready for the ladies to bring their winter slope style to the beach! The Supergirl skateboard jam will feature both pro and amateur street competitions with the world’s top female skaters on a custom-built course. For the first time in Supergirl Jam history, the Am-Jam contest will be hosted on the pro course and the top amateurs will advance to get a shot at competing alongside the pros.

LOS ANGELES (August 11, 2011) – Venice Beach is gearing up to host the 5th Annual Supergirl Jam — the action sports industry’s only large-scale, all-female competition and lifestyle series — on Sunday, August 21.  The world’s top female athletes in skateboarding and snowboarding will take over the heart of the famed Venice Beach Boardwalk to compete in front of thousands of fans.

The Supergirl Jam is designed to empower young women by celebrating their strength, independence, creativity and intelligence and showcases nearly 100 of the top athletes in action sports competing for the coveted Supergirl pink cape.

The snowboard rail-jam contest will feature a 28-foot tall man-made mountain onto which 80,000 pounds of REAL snow will be packed and ready for the ladies to bring their winter slope style to the beach!  2010 Champion Danyale Patterson (Anchorage, AK) will be back to defend her title against two-time winner, Laurie Currier (Wrightwood, CA), and last year’s runner-up, Desiree Melancon (Riverside, CA).

The Supergirl skateboard jam will feature both pro and amateur street competitions with the world’s top female skaters on a custom-built course. For the first time in Supergirl Jam history, the Am-Jam contest will be hosted on the pro course and the top amateurs will advance to get a shot at competing alongside the pros.

The star-studded field of skateboarders will include defending champ and X Games Gold Medalist Alexis Sablone (New York, NY), former Supergirl Jam champ Amy Caron (Huntington Beach, CA), and Brazil’s young star Jessica Florencio (Sao Paulo, BR).

The event kicks off at noon at the corner of Windward Ave. and the Venice Beach Boardwalk (next to the basketball courts) and will wrap up around 5 p.m. Guests will also enjoy a festival village complete with a DJ, autograph signings with the pros, and vendors. Admission to the event is free and open to the public.

“This is one of my favorite events of the summer and I can’t wait to get back to the snow on the beach,” said pro snowboarder Jamie Madrid.
